Young Women’s One Day Conference – 2012 held in New York
New York: The Northeast Regional Youth Fellowship of the Mar Thoma Church hosted the 3rd Annual Young Women’s Conference on Saturday, January 14th from 8:30am to 3:00pm at Long Island Mar Thoma Church, Merrick, NY. It was an opportunity for many women in the region to come and discuss the contemporary faith-related issues in a safe and open environment. The day started with worship followed by Bible study by Mrs. Ruby Mathai Kochamma of Salem Mar Thoma Church, NY. The main speaker was Mrs. Susan Thomas from LIMC and she focused on the theme verse taken from Psalms 139: 13-14, “For you created my inmost being … I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made”. All young women were encouraged to affirm their self-identity and self-worth given by God.
Young women, including young teenagers, college students and those who are preparing for / have entered marriage were in attendance. The main talk was followed by group discussions. There were also a variety of topics based on each age group. Group leaders from all over the region helped to facilitate discussions about the concerns of young women today and how to improve themselves with God as their main guide.
A series of four workshops were held that addressed the needs and concerns commonly faced ineveryday living. The workshops were on nutrition, on how to change flat tire/basic car maintenance, ZUMBA class with a certified instructor, and grooming tips. Toward the end of the day participants completed a service project to help the victims of domestic violence. This service activity affirmed that we as a community need to work for justice and care for women in need.
Mrs. Sarah Jacob served as the convener for the conference. Rev. Varghese Mathai, Rev. A. B. Binu and Rev. Biju P. Simon attended the event.
