Our Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius visited Detroit Mar Thoma church as they celebrated its 29th parish day on Sunday 20th March, 2011. There was a special Holy Communion service for the first communicants; in which12 children received Holy Communion
The program started immediately after the worship service with a song by the English choir and a prayer by Rev. P. Chacko. Our Vicar, Rev. Abraham Thomas offered the welcome.
The Parish Secretary, Mr. Philip Varghese, presented the annual report for the year 2010. The Sunday school children presented two melodious songs.
Thirumeni, in his parish day message stressed the need to extend the boundaries of our mission and fellowship to the less fortunate around us.
There was a program to honor sixteen senior citizens of the parish, who turned seventy years of age.
On behalf of the parish President Rev Abraham Thomas, the Vice President Mr. Alex K John felicitated them for their selfless and sacrificial services in establishing the parish way back in 1970’s and exhorted the young generation to respect the elderly and be grateful for what they have done for the community. In recognition of their dedicated service, Thirumeni presented them with ”Ponnada” and bouquet. In his reply speech, Rev. Philip Varghese thanked the parish on behalf of the senior citizens.
It was also an occasion to celebrate the Ordination Silver Jubilee of our Vicar, Rev. Abraham Thomas. Mr. Alan John on behalf of the parish felicitated Achen, presenting a report of his last twenty-five years of service in the church. Thirumeni presented a plaque as recognition of Achen’s dedicated service and the trustee Mr. Mathew Philip presented a gift as a token of love and appreciation of the Parish. In his reply speech Achen thanked God for His wonderful guidance during the last twenty five years and remembered his experiences working in various parishes of the Mar Thoma church. There was a cake cutting ceremony to share the joy with Thirumeni and the parishioners.
IDetroit Mar Thoma church is hosting the VIIIth, National conference of Edavaka Mission of the Diocese in July 2011. A web site was launched by Thirumeni in connection with the conference. The registration was inaugurated and the kick-off of souvenir advertisement was done during the program.
Joint Secretary Mr. Wilson Jacob offered the vote of thanks and the program ended with prayer and benediction by Thirumeni. After ‘Kaimuthu’ there was a photo session followed by luncheon fellowship.
